Balance for Nerves

Anxiety, a natural human reaction, serves an important survival function and is activated whenever a person perceives danger or threat. It is completely normal to worry about things in your day-to-day life, but excessive anxiety can become a disabling disorder. Symptoms of anxiety can include: headaches, diarrhoea, fatigue, rapid heartbeat and breathing, digestive disorders, sleeping problems and muscle tension.

Stress and anxiety have become common features of modern life, with scientists warning that excessive stress may have a negative impact. In times of stress and anxiety, a combination of natural nutrients may be very beneficial.  Often referred to as “nature’s relaxant”, the mineral, magnesium supports a relaxed body and mind, but is quickly depleted when under stress.  It can be effectively combined with B vitamins which support the adrenal glands, the nervous system and energy production. Vitamin B6 which contributes to the normal functioning of the nervous system is also depleted by chronic stress, whilst pantothenic acid, or vitamin B5 is vital for the production of stress-related hormones and may play a protective role against the effects of stress.   A combination of the herbs passionflower and lemon balm can assist in promoting a state of calm.

“Mindfulness” or being more aware of your thoughts and feelings in the present moment, may be supported by the amino acid, theanine, which is naturally found in green tea.  Theanine has historically been used for its anti-anxiety effects.  Like taurine, theanine, is thought to aid the production of GABA to support a relaxed disposition and calm the nervous system.  Theanine has also been found to aid alpha wave production in the brain, associated with relaxation and general well-being without drowsiness and so could be ideal for students who need both focus and calm once the exam season gets underway!
